NFL Responds to Travis Kelce’s Comment that they’re ‘Overdoing’ Taylor Swift Coverage

The NFL has found itself in a bit of a media blitz after Travis Kelce, the renowned tight end of the Kansas City Chiefs, made comments suggesting they were “overdoing” their coverage of Taylor Swift at recent games. Swift, 33, has made headlines by appearing at two of Kelce’s recent NFL games, the first being the Chiefs’ impressive 41-10 win over the Chicago Bears on September 24.

During that game, Swift was spotted in the company of Kelce’s mother, Donna Kelce, which led to wild rumors that she had made a stealthy exit from the stadium concealed within a popcorn machine. Adding to the intrigue, Swift attended the Chiefs’ 23-20 victory at the MetLife Stadium, the home turf of the New York Jets.

Throughout these games, NBC Sports (NBS) frequently cut to Swift and her celebrity companions, including Sophie Turner, Ryan Reynolds, and Hugh Jackman, to capture their reactions. Cameras even caught Swift allegedly making a “flirty comment” to Blake Lively about Kelce, fueling speculation about their rumored romance. The NFL also contributed to the Swift hype by posting about the “Midnights” singer on their social media platforms. At one point, they tweaked their Instagram bio to read, “The @Chiefs are now 2-0 with @TaylorSwift13 in attendance.”

However, this exhaustive coverage of Swift’s presence at NFL games did not sit well with some sports enthusiasts. A video clip of Seattle Seahawks and New York Giants fans “booing” an advert for the upcoming Eras Tour film recently went viral, reflecting the discontent among some fans. Travis Kelce himself has joined the chorus of voices critical of the excessive attention on Swift’s attendance at games.

Speaking on his New Heights podcast, co-hosted by his brother Jason Kelce, the center for the Philadelphia Eagles, Travis Kelce stated, “I think it’s fun when they show who all is at the game. I think it brings a little bit more to the atmosphere, brings a little bit more to what you’re watching.”

In response to Kelce’s comments, the NFL issued a statement via PEOPLE on October 4th. The statement explained, “We frequently change our bios and profile imagery based on what’s happening in and around our games, as well as culturally.” It continued by acknowledging the intersection of sport and entertainment represented by the presence of Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce at the games, asserting that the NFL has embraced this pop culture moment in real-time.

The statement went on to emphasize that despite the focus on Swift and Kelce, the vast majority of the NFL’s content remains centered on the games, players, and various other initiatives. These initiatives include projects like the Toy Story Funday Football alt-cast and international games, which showcase the league’s commitment to diverse content beyond the celebrity sightings.

In essence, the NFL defended its coverage choices, explaining that the presence of Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce at their games was a unique pop culture moment they wanted to celebrate while still maintaining their primary focus on the sport itself. It remains to be seen how this debate will affect future coverage decisions and whether the league will strike a different balance in its future broadcasts.
