Robert De Niro made headlines this week after it was revealed that he had become a father for the seventh time, with girlfriend Tiffany Chen as the mother.
In a recent interview with ET Canada, the 79-year-old actor opened up about fatherhood and how he tries to be loving with his children while also having to lay down the law sometimes.
“I mean, there’s no way around it with kids,” De Niro explained. “But you just have no choice. And any parent, I think, would say the same thing. You always want to do the right thing by the children and give them the benefit of the doubt but sometimes you can’t.”
During the interview, the actor corrected the interviewer when he mentioned his six children, revealing that he actually had seven. “I just had a baby,” he said.
A few days later, De Niro shared the first photo of his newborn daughter and revealed her name to CBS Mornings.
The actor explained that he hadn’t mentioned the baby during the previous interview because he didn’t want to take away from the promotion of his upcoming movie.
However, he agreed to send a photo of the baby to the reporter, who also got the scoop on her name.
De Niro and Chen decided to name their daughter Gia Virginia Chen-De Niro, and the actor confirmed that the baby was planned and that they were “over the moon” about her arrival. “She was brought here by love,” he said.
The actor’s decision to become a father again at the age of 79 has sparked some surprise among fans and observers, but De Niro seems unfazed by the idea of running around after a young child in his late seventies.
Instead, he is embracing the experience of fatherhood once again, and seems to be as loving and devoted to his children as ever.
