Doctor Explained Why People May Need To Poop Right After Eating

A doctor has explained why some people need to use the toilet shortly after eating.

The experience can feel sudden and uncomfortable for some people. However, it does not usually mean food has moved instantly through the body.

Dr. Joseph Salhab, a board-certified gastroenterologist, discussed the topic in a viral TikTok video. He addressed a common misconception about needing to poop soon after eating, he said the reaction is linked to the body’s normal digestive process.

He explained that the food someone has just eaten is not immediately leaving the body. Instead, the urge is usually caused by something called the gastrocolic reflex. This reflex begins when food enters the stomach.

“When you eat and you feel like you have to use the restroom right after this is something called the gastrocolic reflex,” Dr. Salhab explained.

The gastrocolic reflex is a normal involuntary reaction to food entering the stomach. As the stomach fills, it expands to make space for more food. That expansion can send signals to the colon.

Reflex can trigger the colon

The colon already contains stool and water from earlier digestion. When the gastrocolic reflex is triggered, the colon may begin moving its contents. That movement can create the sudden urge to use the bathroom.

Dr. Salhab said the stool that comes out is not newly eaten food. It is older digested food and water already inside the colon. The recent meal simply helps trigger the body’s response.

“Your colon normally houses stool and water, the stuff that’s actually coming out is old digested food and water,” he said.

For some people, the reflex is mild and barely noticeable. For others, it can feel much stronger after meals. The strength of the response may vary depending on health, stress and diet.

Some viewers said the explanation helped them understand their own digestion. One person wrote: “This makes so much sense!” Another added: “This changes everything.” A third joked: “Wow, my whole life has been a lie.”

Some conditions may make symptoms stronger

The gastrocolic reflex itself is considered normal. However, some medical conditions can make the response more intense. These include irritable bowel syndrome, food allergies, food intolerances and anxiety.

Other possible related conditions include gastritis, celiac disease and inflammatory bowel disease. Crohn’s disease may also affect digestive responses after eating. These conditions can sometimes cause additional symptoms.

Those symptoms may include frequent gas, abdominal pain or discomfort. Some people may also notice mucus in their stool. These signs can indicate that something more than a normal reflex is happening.

A stronger response after food does not always mean a serious problem. However, repeated or severe symptoms can be worth checking. People should pay attention to how often it happens and whether other symptoms appear.

Medical advice may be needed if the response is intense and frequent. A doctor should also be contacted if diarrhea lasts longer than two days. Additional gastric symptoms can also be a reason to seek medical help.
