A woman has revealed she is divorcing her husband after discovering he repeatedly left their dogs outside in the cold.
The situation blew up online after she shared the story on Reddit, with thousands of people rushing to give their verdict.
She made it clear this was not a heat-of-the-moment decision, but something that completely destroyed her trust.
Posting in the subreddit ‘r/AITAH’, a spin-off of Reddit’s famous ‘Am I The A**hole’ community, the woman explained how the situation unfolded. The user, known as Budget-Response5525, described how her dogs meant everything to her and always had.
She wrote: “I (34f) am married to my husband (36m) and have been for 3 years. I have 2 dogs that I have had since before I married him. My dogs are like my children and he knows this and I thought that was how he thought of them.”
The woman explained that her job requires frequent work trips, sometimes lasting weeks at a time. She said she was open about this before taking the role and discussed responsibilities clearly with her husband.
According to her, he agreed to the arrangement and reassured her there would be no problems.
She added: “My job requires me to go on a lot of trips throughout the month. These trips can vary from 3 days to 3 weeks. Before I started this job I did talk to my husband as I explained I would be away a lot and it would leave him to take care of the house.”
What happened while she was away
Anticipating criticism, the woman clarified that she never expected her husband to do everything.
She explained she handled most of the care and only asked him to help with feeding when necessary., she said he agreed without hesitation.
She wrote: “Before you say it’s not his job to take care of the dogs. I did say he wouldn’t have to do much just feed them dinner as I would feed them breakfast (unless I’m away) and that’s it as I would walk them when I get home. He agreed and it all seemed fine.”
Fast forward to a month ago, when she left for a two-week work trip after preparing her husband again. She said he told her not to worry and promised he had everything under control.
She continued: “Now fast forward to a month ago, I had a work trip coming up and it was quite a long one. It would be for 2 weeks and I had prepared my husband for it, telling him what needs to be done. He told me not to worry and he would be fine so I left it at that.”
Things took a dramatic turn shortly after she arrived. She received a message from her mother asking if something had happened to the dogs. Confused and alarmed, she pressed for details.
She wrote: “She said she went round to drop of some things and saw my dogs tied up on the front porch. I was shocked and told her to send a picture.”
The moment everything fell apart
The woman immediately told her mother to untie the dogs and take them away to safety.
She also planned to cancel her work trip and return home. When she arrived, she found her husband panicking on the phone.
She wrote: “Once I got home and opened the front door, my husband was in the living room on the phone with someone sounding alarmed. I tried to act normal and walked up to him. He seemed surprised to see him and then very worried.”
When she asked what was wrong, her husband claimed the dogs were missing. She said she played along despite knowing the truth.
She continued: “I asked him what’s wrong and he said he lost my dogs. I knew what had really happened but I played along. I said how? And he sheepishly told me he had locked them outside for making too much noise and someone must have taken them.”
He reportedly defended himself by saying the dogs annoyed him and were not his responsibility. That was the breaking point.
She wrote: “I was disappointed to say the least. I asked him why would he do that and he said they were annoying him and it shouldn’t be his responsibility.”
She packed a bag and left to stay with her mother, telling her husband she needed space. Since then, she says he has bombarded her with calls accusing her of being dramatic.
She added: “Even my mil has been calling me dramatic and selfish. I haven’t told him I have my dogs. But it’s not just about that it’s about the fact that I don’t trust him anymore.”
