Woman Who Was Stabbed 32 Times By Her Abusive Ex-boyfriend Marries The Paramedic That Saved Her Life

At 20 years old, Melissa Dohme believed her life was over.

She had been stabbed more than 30 times by her ex-boyfriend, left bleeding in the road, and expected to d*e.

Against all odds, she survived, rebuilt her life, and later married one of the men who helped save her.

Before the attack, Melissa was a college student in Florida working full-time at a hospital reception desk.

She dreamed of becoming a nurse and was trying to build a future she felt proud of. At the time, she was dating Robert Burton, a boyfriend she had known since high school.

At first, the relationship seemed normal. He was charming, funny, and someone she spent nearly all her time with. But when Melissa began applying to universities, his behaviour changed dramatically.

He became controlling, jealous, and emotionally abusive, trying to tear her down whenever she aimed higher.

When she attempted to leave him, he manipulated her with threats of self-harm. What began as emotional control eventually escalated into physical violence.

In October 2011, after an argument, he attacked her, leading to his arrest and a short jail sentence. Melissa believed she was finally free.

The night everything went wrong

For months after the arrest, Robert stayed away. Melissa learned through social media that he had moved on and assumed the danger had passed.

Then, in the early hours of 24 January 2012, he called her.

He claimed he needed closure and asked to see her one last time. He promised it would be a final goodbye. Against her instincts, Melissa agreed, taking pepper spray and her phone for protection.

As soon as she stepped outside, he reached out for a hug while holding a switchblade. He opened it and began stabbing her repeatedly.

Melissa remembers feeling the first few wounds before her body went into survival mode. She fought, screamed, and tried to escape as she lost massive amounts of blood.

Two nearby teenagers heard her screams and called 911. When Robert realised police were coming, he retrieved a larger serrated knife from his truck and attacked her again, determined to finish what he started.

He left her bleeding in the road, convinced she would d*e.

Melissa prayed for her life as she faded in and out of consciousness. When a police officer finally found her, she felt a rush of awareness and managed to identify her attacker, despite suffering a stroke caused by blood loss.

She later learned she d*ed multiple times on the operating table and was repeatedly resuscitated. Doctors described her survival as nothing short of a miracle.

Rebuilding from the unimaginable

Melissa’s injuries were catastrophic. She suffered fractures to her skull, jaw, head, and nose.

Her facial nerve was severed, leaving half her face paralysed. She required 12 units of blood, nearly double what the human body normally contains.

When she finally saw herself in the mirror, she broke down. She was missing teeth, had shaved hair, and no longer recognised her own face.

Still, she says her faith kept her grounded, and she focused on being grateful she was alive.

Over time, surgeries helped restore her appearance and mobility. Her scars faded, nerve and muscle procedures helped her smile again, and she returned to school and work as soon as she could.

Melissa believed she would never date again. She felt damaged and unworthy of love, but she knew she could still help others.

She began speaking publicly about domestic violence, encouraging people to recognise abuse and know their worth.

At one speaking event in October 2012, she met the emergency responders who saved her life. One firefighter, Cameron Hill, invited Melissa and her mother to dinner at the fire station.

What started as gratitude slowly turned into something more. After hours of talking, shared interests, and time spent together, Melissa realised she had fallen in love.

From survival to forever

Cameron stood by Melissa in August 2013 when she faced her attacker in court. She refused to look away as he tried to intimidate her, and when the verdict was delivered, she felt her power return.

He was sentenced to life without parole.

Melissa redirected her life toward advocacy, studying business leadership and dedicating herself to speaking out against domestic violence.

Her work earned public recognition, including an invitation to throw the first pitch at a Tampa Bay Rays game.

That moment became unforgettable. Cameron walked onto the field and handed her a baseball with a message written on it: “Will you marry me?” He dropped to one knee, and Melissa said yes without hesitation.

They are now married, surrounded by the people who saved her life, from police officers to surgeons. Melissa says the attack was only one day of her life and refuses to let it define her.

Today, she stands as proof that survival is possible, healing is real, and love can come from the most unexpected places.
