UPS Driver Shares 49 Hour Paycheck and People are Shocked by their Earnings

This summer, the Teamsters union successfully negotiated an agreement with UPS, averting the looming threat of a worker strike. The negotiations aimed to secure better pay and enhanced safety protections for UPS employees.

The resulting deal delivered a significant pay boost to both current full-time and part-time union workers. Specifically, it included a $2.75 hourly wage increase for this year, translating to a substantial $7.50 hourly wage increase throughout the contract’s duration.

Additionally, part-time workers, both existing and new, saw their paychecks grow. Their wages increased to a minimum of $21 per hour right away, with a subsequent raise to $23 per hour.

To underscore the tangible benefits of unionization, a UPS driver took to Reddit, displaying their paycheck for the period spanning from August 27th to September 2nd. Over these seven days, they worked diligently for a total of 49 hours, resulting in a substantial income.

The paycheck they shared totaled more than $2,400 before taxes, a testament to the significant impact of the negotiated deal on UPS workers’ earnings.

Accompanying their post on Reddit, the driver made a compelling statement: “I’m a UPS delivery driver. I have nothing more than a high school diploma. If you’re college-educated with experience in your field making less than I am, you’re getting f**ked. That’s just my opinion.”

The driver expressed disbelief when one of their customers, who held a Ph.D., informed them that they earned more than he did. This revelation prompted the UPS driver to emphasize the importance of unionization, stating, “My union, the Teamsters. Organize or get exploited.”

Responses to the post on Reddit varied, with many applauding the success of the Teamsters union in securing improved conditions and wages for UPS employees. Others emphasized the need for greater wage transparency across industries.

One Reddit user advocated for increased wage transparency, stating, “The working world could use more transparency like this. The more wage/salary info is out there for the public to see, the more fair the market will be.”

Another user, engaged in social work, shared their own experience, revealing that despite holding two master’s degrees, the highest professional license, and various certifications, they didn’t earn a six-figure income. Meanwhile, their husband, engaged in construction with just a high school diploma, earned double their income.

The user encouraged young people to consider pursuing a trade, highlighting that careers in construction, electrical work, plumbing, and other skilled trades often offered higher earning potential compared to generic professions.

Another Reddit contributor, an aerospace engineer, expressed that they earned less than the UPS driver.

In a follow-up comment, the UPS driver revealed that they had worked at the company for five years as a driver, preceded by two years as a package handler. They acknowledged the good pay but also mentioned returning home exhausted every night due to the demands of their job.

The UPS driver’s post shed light on the impact of effective labor negotiations and unionization, showcasing the potential for significantly improved wages and working conditions in various industries.
