Sydney Sweeney is pushing back against the outrage around her controversial American Eagle “good genes” advert, insisting the backlash was “uncontrollable.”
The 27-year-old Euphoria star was enjoying a massive career high when she landed the campaign. Her role as Cassie had earned her an Emmy nod and major mainstream recognition.
But the moment the ad dropped, everything flipped.
The campaign’s wordplay between “good jeans” and “good genes” triggered instant backlash online.
Many critics argued the line echoed racist and white supremacist rhetoric long associated with eugenics.
Sweeney was dragged across social media.
Fans accused her of fronting a campaign that used racist dog whistles for attention.
Commentators even suggested the ad flirted with white supremacy messaging.
And still, Sweeney stayed silent — until last week.
Sweeney Breaks Her Silence… And Still Refuses to Take Responsibility
Speaking to The Guardian, Sweeney made it clear she didn’t plan to dissect the controversy. She focused the interview on her new film Christy, dodging every attempt to discuss the ad.
When asked directly, Sweeney shrugged off the criticism entirely.
She said: “I think what’s interesting is I’m always myself. I’m always just me. But it’s what other people put on me that’s uncontrollable.”
She then told interviewer Rachel Aroesti: “Like you’re going to write this article … Then people will read it and have their own perception. So I try and be as much of me as possible, but it’s always through other people’s lenses.”
She later doubled down in GQ, saying: “I did a jean ad. The reaction definitely was a surprise, but I love jeans.”
She added: “All I wear are jeans. I’m literally in jeans and a T-shirt every day of my life.”
Fans said she was completely missing the point.
Many accused her of ignoring the deeper issue and brushing off the seriousness of the criticism.
Old Controversies Resurface as the Ad Drama Explodes
The ad scandal also revived past scrutiny of Sweeney’s political leanings.
Back in 2022, she faced backlash after photos surfaced from her mom’s 60th birthday party. Guests were seen wearing MAGA hats and Blue Lives Matter shirts.
At the time, Sweeney jumped on X and said: “You guys this is wild. An innocent celebration for my mom’s milestone 60th birthday has turned into an absurd political statement.”
She added: “Please stop making assumptions.”
The drama escalated further when Donald Trump chimed in.
He called the American Eagle ad “the hottest ad ever,” which only poured fuel on the fire.
This came shortly after reports revealed Sweeney is a registered Republican, which many fans felt explained her silence.
There were also claims earlier this week that Zendaya now refuses to do press with Sweeney due to an alleged fall-out.
The rumour sent fans into another frenzy.
Sweeney Still Won’t Apologise — and Fans Are Furious
Throughout the chaos, Sweeney insisted she barely followed the controversy at all.
She said: “It was surreal… it’s not that I didn’t have that feeling, but I wasn’t thinking of it like that.”
She added: “I kind of just put my phone away.”
Sweeney explained she was busy filming Euphoria and working long days.
She said she rarely had her phone on set and had “not really seen a lot of it.”
Despite multiple chances, she refused to apologise or clarify anything about the ad’s alleged references to “genetic superiority.”
Instead, she kept promoting Christy on Instagram.
Her followers weren’t impressed.
Fans flooded her comments demanding answers and asking whether she rejects white supremacy outright.
After days of pressure, Sweeney finally offered one vague comment to GQ.
She said: “I think that when I have an issue that I want to speak about, people will hear.”
The backlash hasn’t slowed down.
And many fans say her silence is speaking louder than any statement she’s made.
