Stranger Things Fans Slam Finale as ‘Worse Than Game of Thrones’

After a decade on screens, Stranger Things has officially come to an end — and many fans are furious.

The Netflix hit concluded with a two-hour finale that aired on New Year’s Eve, prompting some viewers to cancel plans just to watch it live.

Instead of celebrating, social media quickly filled with disappointment, anger, and one comparison that every showrunner dreads: Game of Thrones.

Creators Matt and Ross Duffer, whose series earned 12 Primetime Emmy Awards and global acclaim, now face intense backlash.

Viewers argue the final episode failed to live up to the emotional weight built over ten years. For many, the ending felt safe, confusing, and overly sentimental rather than bold.

One fan wrote on X: “Stranger Things after taking 10 years to end… only to deliver the worst finale since Game of Thrones.”

Another added: “Trying to decide if this was worse than Game of Thrones or Lost.”

A third was even harsher: “The Game of Thrones ending was better than this — and that was trash.”

Why the Ending Sparked So Much Anger

Much of the criticism centers on the show’s refusal to deliver real consequences. Fans expected meaningful character deaths after seasons of escalating danger.

Instead, the finale leaned toward a fairytale resolution, leaving many feeling cheated.

While Eleven appears to die during the climax, the moment quickly becomes muddled. The Upside Down collapses, sacrifices are teased, and tension peaks — only for the story to retreat. For viewers, the emotional payoff never arrives.

“Ten years of build-up for zero risk,” one fan complained. Others echoed the same frustration, arguing the finale lacked courage.

Many felt the show tried too hard to please everyone, which ultimately pleased no one.

Fate of the Main Characters

The finale does attempt to wrap up every storyline. Kali seemingly dies during a confrontation involving Hopper and Eleven, killed by the military.

That moment pushes Eleven to snap, leading her to kill Lieutenant Akers.

Eleven’s fate remains deliberately unclear. She appears to stay behind in the collapsing Upside Down, seemingly sacrificing herself to seal the wormhole.

However, an 18-month time jump complicates everything. Mike hints that Kali survived and used her powers to fake Eleven’s death, allowing her to escape to safety.

The time jump also provides neat endings for the Hawkins group. Mike, Will, Dustin, Lucas, and Max prepare for graduation and play one final game of Dungeons & Dragons.

Max and Lucas reunite. Dustin becomes valedictorian and heads to college. Will moves to a big city after coming out. Mike becomes a professional writer.

The older teens also get tidy conclusions. Steve stays in Hawkins. Robin heads to Smith College. Nancy joins The Boston Herald.

Jonathan studies filmmaking at NYU. Hopper proposes to Joyce and hints at a future together in Montauk.

Creators Defend the Choice

Matt Duffer defended the approach, saying the goal was happiness, not tragedy. “We wanted each of the characters to find happiness, but in their own specific ways,” he told Tudum.

Ross Duffer added that Eleven “lives on in their hearts, whether that’s real or not.”

For critics, those comments only reinforced the problem. Many believe the Duffers avoided killing major characters to keep sequel options open. That decision, fans argue, stripped the finale of impact.

As the dust settles, Stranger Things now joins a small but infamous list of beloved shows whose endings divided audiences.

Whether time softens the reaction remains to be seen. For now, many fans feel the Upside Down wasn’t the scariest part — the finale was.
