The music world is mourning a huge loss.
Paul Roberts, the choreographer behind One Direction’s biggest moments, has died at just 52.
Known for his work with global stars from Spice Girls to Steps, Roberts became a legend among Directioners thanks to his iconic routines.
He choreographed One Direction: This Is Us back in 2013, as well as the fan-favourite “Best Song Ever” video, still hailed as one of the band’s most memorable performances.
In a heartbreaking statement, Roberts’ family confirmed he had passed away at home after a long fight with cancer.

“His departure, much like his life, was filled with grace,” they wrote.
Tributes from stars and fans have poured in.
Sam Smith said: “This is heartbreaking. Paul was a light in this world. I’ll never forget his kindness and his sparkle.”
Singer Sophie Ellis-Bextor added: “Paul was so special. So talented, but also warm and sweet and fun. I’m so sorry he’s not here any more.”

Harry Styles Connection
Roberts’ influence reached far beyond One Direction’s early days.
He worked with Harry Styles on the Treat People With Kindness music video, which went on to win Best Choreography at the 2021 VMAs.
At the time, Roberts celebrated: “I can’t believe we’ve won a Moon Man. You really loved our dance! I’m all giddy. For the love of dance.”
Fans Say “Thank You”
Directioners across the world have flooded social media with tributes.
One fan posted: “Without Paul, 1D wouldn’t have been 1D. Thank you for the memories. Rest in peace.”
Another wrote: “He gave us Best Song Ever. He gave us joy. He gave us movement. Eternal gratitude.”
A third added: “The boys wouldn’t be who they are without him. Fly high, legend.”
Clips of Roberts joking with the band during rehearsals have resurfaced on TikTok, with fans calling him the “sixth member of One Direction.”
Others shared old concert footage, pointing out dance moments that Roberts choreographed, with captions like: “You shaped our teenage years, Paul.”

Speaking about 1D in 2021, Roberts told the BBC: “I knew very early there was magic about them.”
“They’d mess around with silly moves, but I thought, ‘If you wanted to, you could be incredible dancers.’”
Directioners and colleagues are now remembering Roberts not just as a choreographer, but as the man who helped shape an era of pop.
One tribute summed it up best: “One of the kindest and most beautiful souls. His magic will never leave the people he loved.”
