Netflix fans are bingeing new ’10/10′ drama series

Netflix’s latest offering, the Flemish-Dutch drama series “High Tides” (originally titled “Knokke Off”), has been creating waves among viewers, earning widespread acclaim and a ’10/10′ rating. Directed by Anthony Van Biervliet, the series delves into the lives of young adults grappling with love, friendship, and self-discovery against the backdrop of the Belgian coast.
The show begins with Louise Basteyns (played by Pommelien Thijs) and her boyfriend Alexandre “Alex” Vandael (Willem De Schryver) arriving in the serene coastal town of Knokke, expecting a tranquil summer. However, their idyllic expectations are quickly shattered as they confront the burdensome expectations of their affluent families. The summer unfolds with the group’s seemingly perfect lives unraveling, exposing their deep-seated issues.
Alex, haunted by his father Patrick’s (Geert Van Rampelberg) affair with his mother’s best friend, struggles with anger and internal conflict. Meanwhile, his girlfriend Laura battles her bipolar disorder, torn between relying on her medication and her desire for independence.
The arrival of Daan (Eliyha Altena) and his mother Melissa (Anna Drijver) adds further complexity to the narrative. Daan, working at a local surfing club, becomes embroiled in a love triangle with Louise and Alex, sparking tensions within the group.
Viewers have taken to social media platforms, formerly known as Twitter, to express their enthusiasm for “High Tides.” Comments range from praising its quality – “Don’t know what Netflix put in knokke off but it’s really good” – to calls for a second season: “Knokke Off (High Tides) was surprisingly good. Maybe should think about a season 2!” The show’s engaging and ‘messy’ storyline has captivated audiences, with one viewer noting, “High tides on Netflix??? This show is so messy omg lol.”
In addition to “High Tides,” Netflix has also released “Blue Eyed Samurai,” a Japanese action drama that has been likened to ‘Kill Bill meets Yentl.’ Co-created by Amber Noizum, the series follows Mizu (Maya Erskine), a mixed-race sword master, on her quest for revenge in 17th century Japan. Mizu’s journey is driven by her desire to avenge her white father, who left her with blue eyes, marking her as a ‘creature of shame.’ She embarks on a challenging path, disguising her gender and distinctive eyes, determined to find her father among the few white men in Japan at the time.
“Blue Eyed Samurai” has not only captivated fans but also impressed critics, achieving a perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes. The animation series stands out for its unique storyline and compelling character development.
Both “High Tides” and “Blue Eyed Samurai” exemplify Netflix’s commitment to diverse and engaging content, offering viewers a range of narratives that span different cultures and genres. These shows have not only entertained audiences but also sparked discussions and garnered critical acclaim, solidifying Netflix’s position as a leading platform for innovative storytelling.
