Megan Rapinoe, the celebrated soccer icon, has vocally confronted the chorus of right-wing detractors who, she asserts, have been eagerly anticipating the downfall of the US Women’s National Team (USWNT) in the World Cup. In an interview with The Atlantic, Rapinoe expressed her disappointment with the “disingenuous and absurd” criticism that she and the team have been subjected to following their untimely exit from the tournament.
The Women’s World Cup took a dramatic turn when the USWNT suffered an early elimination, a result that was seized upon by former President Donald Trump and right-wing commentators like Megyn Kelly, who reveled in the team’s historic loss.
Rapinoe, who has been a steadfast advocate for equality and social justice, termed the commentary surrounding the team’s defeat as “really disappointing.” In her interview, she articulated her perspective on the long-standing animosity that some quarters have harbored toward the team. “Everybody on the right — and everybody who was using hateful language and these tropes — it’s like they have just been waiting since, I don’t know, 2016? 2019? They’ve been waiting for this team to stumble,” Rapinoe emphasized. However, she pointed out the paradox that arises: “But when we are perfect, then we are accused of thinking that we’re perfect.”
Former President Trump, known for his candid and provocative statements, mockingly commented on the USWNT’s loss. On his social media platform, Truth Social, he remarked, “The ‘shocking and totally unexpected’ loss by the U.S. Women’s Soccer Team to Sweden is fully emblematic of what is happening to our once great Nation under Crooked Joe Biden.” He added, “Nice shot Megan, the USA is going to Hell!!! MAGA.”
In response, Rapinoe dissected Trump’s words, categorizing them as “fake” and a collection of “hit words and hot-button words that don’t actually make any sort of sense or square with reality at all.” She further criticized the surge of criticism, particularly in the aftermath of her missed penalty kick, as a “particularly fake and disingenuous and absurd and outrageous” narrative. Rapinoe robustly defended her efforts on the field, questioning the rationale behind being chastised for giving her all.
Rapinoe’s remarks not only underscore her resilience but also her commitment to standing up against unjust criticism and advocating for her teammates. Throughout her career, she has been a vocal proponent of equality, diversity, and women’s rights, using her platform to spark conversations that transcend the realm of sports.
