Katy Perry is Suing Katie Perry again to Continue Her 14-Year Legal Battle

The intricate web of legalities began in 2019 when Australian fashion designer Katie Taylor, who operates her fashion line under her given name Katie Perry, initiated legal action against the chart-topping ‘Dark Horse’ songstress.

Hailing from Sydney, the designer had been selling her clothing designs under her name since 2007 and had even secured a trademark registration for it back in 2008. However, in that very same year, Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson catapulted to fame with hits like ‘I Kissed A Girl’ and ‘Hot N Cold’ under her stage moniker, as many have already guessed, Katy Perry.

Within Katie Perry’s lawsuit, she contended that the pop star had vended clothing and merchandise in Australia during 2014 and 2018, flagrantly ignoring the existing trademark held by the designer. A feud over rights and trademarks has ensued between the two since as far back as 2009—Katy Perry’s camp is adamant about obtaining complete ownership of the name, while Katie Perry remains resolute in her position.

The tussle escalated, reaching a pivotal point earlier this year when the Australian Federal Court ruled in favor of Katie Perry. The court deemed that Katy Perry’s company, Kitty Purry, had partially infringed upon her established trademark. Justice Brigitte Markovic, presiding over the case, decreed that the apparel sold during Katy Perry’s 2014 tour did indeed breach the trademark. However, the judge dismissed additional allegations concerning the sale of the singer’s merchandise both in physical stores and online during 2018.

The judge also discarded Katy Perry’s counter-argument to completely nullify the Katie Perry trademark altogether. In a surprising twist, it was revealed that the designer had disclosed a statement from the star in which she referred to her as a ‘dumb b**ch’ in emails exchanged with her manager. For Katie Perry, this court victory was a triumph for small businesses, as she conveyed to The New York Post.

Nevertheless, as the summer unfolded, Katy Perry’s legal team lodged an appeal against the court’s decision. Katie Perry shared her perspective on the appeal, expressing her belief that the case had a foreseeable conclusion, but the pop sensation had chosen to extend the legal battle further.

Anticipating her return to court with Katy Perry in either November or December, Katie voiced her concerns about her business’s future. She underscored that her fashion label is not just a livelihood but a dream she has worked tirelessly to build. In the face of this seemingly relentless legal ordeal, Katie Perry remains steadfast and resolved, determined to stand up for her rights, even if it resembles a modern-day David and Goliath confrontation.

When queried about the possibility of this entire ordeal being a publicity stunt, Katie Perry dismissed the notion, highlighting that there are more constructive avenues for a fashion brand to garner attention without undergoing the immense stress and strain of a legal battle. Amidst all this, Katie Perry lamented how Katy Perry’s determination to pursue her interests in court had taken away precious time from her family and her business, thus drawing attention to the personal toll such prolonged disputes can take.
