In a turn of events that has captured the attention of many, Gypsy Rose Blanchard is set to be released from prison in just one week. At 32 years old, Gypsy was sentenced to a decade behind bars in 2016 after pleading guilty to the second-degree murder of her mother, Clauddine ‘Dee Dee’ Blanchard. Now, after serving 85 percent of her sentence, she is eligible for early release due to good behavior and the nature of her sentencing.
Gypsy’s life has been anything but ordinary. As a child, she endured prolonged mental and physical abuse at the hands of her mother, Dee Dee, who suffered from ‘Munchausen by proxy’—a disorder where a caregiver fabricates or induces illness in a person under their care to gain attention and sympathy. Dee Dee deceived everyone into believing Gypsy was terminally ill, forcing her to use a wheelchair, take unnecessary medications, and shave her head to maintain the illusion of a critically ill child.
The abuse continued unabated for years, leading Gypsy and her then-boyfriend, Nicholas ‘Nick’ Godejohn, to plot the murder of Dee Dee. Godejohn carried out the killing, and when asked about his actions, he expressed no remorse, stating, “I would’ve done it again. I might have done it differently but I would’ve done it again. I couldn’t see [Gypsy Rose] suffer anymore.” For his part in the crime, Godejohn received a life sentence, while Gypsy’s plea led to a lesser sentence due to her circumstances.
The case shocked the nation and became the subject of the 2017 HBO documentary “Mommy Dead and Dearest,” which delved into the bizarre and tragic story of Gypsy’s life with Dee Dee. The documentary revealed startling details about the case and the extent of the deception and abuse Gypsy endured.
As Gypsy prepares for her release, she has committed to “speak her truth” in a new docuseries on Lifetime titled “The Prison Confessions of Gypsy Rose Blanchard.” The six-hour series aims to shed light on aspects of her story that have remained in the shadows, including her life experiences in prison and her marriage to Ryan, whom she wed while incarcerated. The series is scheduled to premiere on January 5, 2024.
In a trailer for the docuseries, Gypsy expresses her desire to break her silence and share her story, saying, “After a lifetime of silence, I finally get to use my voice to share my story and speak my truth.” She continues, “As a survivor of relentless child abuse, this docuseries chronicles my quest for liberation and journey through self-discovery. I am unapologetically myself and unafraid to expose the hidden parts of my life that have never been revealed until now.”
Despite the years spent behind bars, Gypsy has previously stated that she feels more liberated in prison than she ever did under her mother’s tyrannical care. Her impending release marks a significant chapter in her life, one where she hopes to move forward from the past and continue her journey of healing and self-discovery. As the public awaits her release and the premiere of her docuseries, Gypsy Rose Blanchard’s story remains a poignant reminder of the complexities of familial relationships and the human spirit’s resilience.
