Grimes has recently shared that she has decided to change the name of her daughter with Elon Musk, opting for a symbol instead.
The artist expressed her desire to name the child “?” but expressed frustration that the government would not recognize such a choice.
Consequently, the child, previously known as Exa Dark Sideræl, will now be referred to as “Y” or “why?,” according to Grimes.
In a Twitter post, Grimes revealed the alteration, stating, “She’s Y now, or ‘Why?’ or just ‘?’ (But the government won’t recognize that). Curiosity, the eternal question, and such.” Alongside this announcement, Grimes shared a rare photo of her daughter dressed in a red onesie with vibrant green hair, while Grimes herself donned a matching outfit.
The decision to unveil the photograph came as a deviation from their usual practice of keeping their child’s image private.
Grimes explained that she made an exception this time as her daughter appeared “fairly unrecognizable” in the picture, mitigating concerns about invading her privacy.
The couple’s daughter was born in December 2021 via surrogacy, accidentally revealed by Grimes during a Vanity Fair interview when the writer heard the baby’s cries in the background.
Grimes and Musk’s relationship has had its ups and downs, with reports of a breakup in September 2021 and a subsequent confirmation from Grimes in March 2022 that they had separated once again.
This is not the first time Grimes and Musk have faced controversy over their children’s names. Their first son, born in 2020, initially bore the name X Æ A-12, but was later adjusted to X Æ A-Xii to comply with California law, which prohibits the inclusion of numbers in legal names. The child is commonly referred to by the nickname “X.”
The unconventional naming choices of Grimes and Musk have sparked widespread discussion and debate.
While some admire their willingness to defy traditional norms, others criticize their decisions as eccentric and impractical. Regardless, they remain unapologetic in their pursuit of unique monikers for their children, pushing the boundaries of societal expectations.
