The San Bernardino County Sheriff-Coroner has officially disclosed the cause of death of former child star Evan Ellingson, best known for his role in CSI: Miami and the 2009 movie My Sister’s Keeper.
The 35-year-old actor passed away in his Fontana, California home on November 5, and the coroner’s findings have now been revealed.
The devastating news was first reported by TMZ, confirmed by officials and Ellingson’s father.
According to the San Bernardino County coroner’s office, the actor’s body was discovered in a bedroom. Following his tragic death, the Ellingson family released a poignant statement, acknowledging the actor’s relapse in his battle with addiction.
“Our family is heartbroken by the sudden passing of our beloved son, brother, uncle, and friend, Evan,” the family expressed. They described Evan as a caring individual with a child-like spirit, emphasizing his dedication to helping others in their recovery journey. Despite his relapse after three years of sobriety, the family shared Evan’s passion for guiding individuals to resources for help.
In their statement, the family revealed, “While in the end, he fell in his earthly battle with addiction, he was able to choose Jesus as his Lord and Savior and receive eternal life with Him. We already miss Evan and cherish every moment of joy, laughter, and love that he brought to us and so many others.”
The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department’s coroner conducted an autopsy on November 6, listing the manner of Ellingson’s death as an “Accident” as of November 28. A spokesperson for the coroner’s department informed PEOPLE that the actor succumbed to an accidental fentanyl overdose.
Evan Ellingson had been absent from the screen for over a decade, with his final movie role in My Sister’s Keeper, directed by Nick Cassavetes. The film, based on Jodi Picoult’s 2004 novel, featured Ellingson as the son of Cameron Diaz and Jason Patric and the brother of Abigail Breslin.
Abigail Breslin, who portrayed Ellingson’s sister in My Sister’s Keeper, paid tribute to the late actor on Instagram. She remembered him as “a kind, funny and extremely talented human being” and highlighted his dedication to delivering the best performances. Breslin reminisced about his humorous and energetic personality, expressing gratitude for crossing paths with such a wonderful soul.
