Celebrities and political leaders across the globe have been paying tribute to conservative activist Charlie Kirk after he was fatally shot last week. But Marvel star Chris Pratt has found himself facing criticism from some fans over his public remarks.
The 46-year-old actor, best known for playing Star-Lord in Guardians of the Galaxy, posted on X shortly after news of the shooting broke, writing:
“Praying for Charlie Kirk right now, for his wife and young children, for our country. We need God’s grace. God help us.”
At the time, Kirk’s death had not yet been confirmed. The 31-year-old was later pronounced dead following the September 10 shooting at Utah Valley University, where he was answering audience questions.
Fan Backlash
Kirk was a controversial figure, known for founding the conservative student group Turning Point USA and for inflammatory remarks critics labeled racist, misogynistic, and anti-LGBTQ. Some Marvel fans expressed disappointment that Pratt offered prayers for Kirk but had stayed silent during other recent tragedies.
One user wrote: “Oh now you wanna say something like there hasn’t been anything worse happening in the world.”
Another added: “Anyway we ain’t gonna watch anything you’re in. Leave Marvel alone.”
Pratt’s Response
In the face of criticism, Pratt appeared to double down. Over the weekend, he shared a video on Instagram in which he recited a Bible verse and encouraged followers to pause and pray.
“Hey guys, just stop real quick and pray with me,” Pratt said before reciting scripture.
He continued: “Okay, now you can continue scrolling or you can turn your phone off and go outside. Might I suggest the latter. Go get some sunshine. Go look at a tree, touch grass. Call a friend. If you’ve got time to be on your phone right now, you’ve got time to do your to-do list and you’ve got time to reach out to somebody in need. Share this prayer with them.”
The video drew a more mixed response, with some fans criticizing Pratt’s focus but many others appreciating the positive, non-political message.
Ongoing Investigation
Meanwhile, authorities say 22-year-old Utah resident Tyler Robinson has been taken into custody as the alleged shooter in Kirk’s killing. The FBI confirmed it is pursuing additional leads and examining messages Robinson allegedly sent in the aftermath of the shooting.
Kirk, a staunch supporter of Donald Trump, was eulogized by the former president, who called him “an American hero.” Trump is expected to attend Kirk’s funeral later this week in Arizona.
