Robert Redford, the Oscar-winning actor and director who stunned fans by joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe as one of its most memorable villains, has died at the age of 89.
Redford passed away Tuesday morning at his home in Utah, surrounded by family, according to his publicist.
From Hollywood Icon to Marvel Villain
Best known for Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, The Sting, and All the President’s Men, Redford built a reputation as one of the most bankable and respected actors of the 1970s. But decades later, he surprised a new generation by stepping into the world of superheroes.
In Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014), Redford played Alexander Pierce, a high-ranking S.H.I.E.L.D. official who is later revealed to be a Hydra mastermind. His smooth, understated performance turned what could have been a stock comic-book villain into one of the MCU’s most chilling antagonists.
Critics noted how fitting the casting was: Redford, once the face of political thrillers like Three Days of the Condor and All the President’s Men, now embodied the very shadowy government forces he once fought against on screen. The film itself leaned heavily on 1970s paranoia-thriller tropes, and Redford’s presence gave it instant credibility.
He reprised the role with a cameo in Avengers: Endgame (2019), marking one of his last screen appearances. For Marvel fans, his involvement symbolized the MCU’s ability to attract the very best of Hollywood.
A Career Beyond Superheroes
While Marvel may have introduced Redford to a new audience, his career spanned six decades of acting, directing, and activism. He won the Academy Award for Best Director for Ordinary People (1980) and later directed A River Runs Through It and The Horse Whisperer.
He starred in dozens of classics, from The Way We Were to The Candidate, and gave acclaimed late-career performances in All Is Lost (2013) and The Old Man and the Gun (2018), which he called his farewell to acting.
Beyond Hollywood, Redford founded the Sundance Institute and Sundance Film Festival, which became the beating heart of independent cinema and launched the careers of Quentin Tarantino, Steven Soderbergh, and Paul Thomas Anderson.

For many, Redford will always be the golden-haired outlaw of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. For others, he will be the visionary behind Sundance. But for younger generations, his legacy includes a pivotal Marvel villain whose calm authority made betrayal all the more devastating.
