The View Hosts Slam Jason Aldean’s Controversial, ‘Deplorable’ New Music Video

Jason Aldean’s latest music video has sparked strong reactions from the hosts of The View, with Whoopi Goldberg leading the charge in criticizing the country star’s controversial portrayal. The video for “Try That in a Small Town” has been widely condemned for what some see as perpetuating racism by including footage of protests juxtaposed with provocative lyrics.

Goldberg expressed her disappointment in Aldean’s choice of imagery, particularly involving the Black Lives Matter movement. She argued that the video’s portrayal of people taking care of each other in small towns was undermined by the potentially divisive elements it incorporated. The inclusion of protests in the video led to questions about the artist’s intentions and whether it inadvertently focused on racial issues.

Alyssa Farah Griffin, the conservative cohost, gave Aldean the benefit of the doubt, hoping that his intentions were not to provoke division or glorify violence and racism. However, she couldn’t ignore how the lyrics of the song reminded her of the tragic murder of Ahmaud Arbery, a Black man killed in a small town in the South for no apparent reason.

In contrast, Joy Behar and Sunny Hostin were less forgiving. Behar harshly described the song as “deplorable” and “annoying,” while Hostin drew a personal connection to the imagery used in the video. Sharing her family’s experience with racial persecution, she emphasized that such sensitive material shouldn’t be taken lightly. Hostin challenged the notion that Aldean might not have been fully aware of the implications of using such imagery, asserting that he likely embraced it knowingly.

When a response from Aldean was read, wherein he defended his song and disavowed any intention to promote racism, Goldberg reacted with skepticism. She declared that Aldean had crossed a line with his artistic choices, and his claims of innocence did not hold up in her eyes.

The contentious debate highlighted the ongoing issue of race in the United States and the need for open discussions about its existence and impact. The View panelists expressed a range of emotions, reflecting the complexities of art, intention, and perception.

As the controversy unfolded, CMT pulled the “Try That in a Small Town” music video from its rotation, indicating the significant impact of the public outcry. The incident serves as a reminder that artistic expression can carry profound societal implications, requiring careful consideration and sensitivity to the diverse experiences and emotions it may evoke.
