Stranger Things is finally back for its fifth and final season, but not everyone is impressed.
After years of hype, theories, and emotional build-up, Netflix dropped Volume 1 of Season 5 – and while the nostalgia is strong, fans say the stakes are not.
The show exploded in popularity back in 2016 as a supernatural, ’80s-inspired adventure with real danger, real loss, and unforgettable characters.
Over time, it became one of Netflix’s biggest shows ever. But now, despite strong acting, epic visuals, and darker themes, viewers are calling out one very specific problem – nobody important is actually dying.
Fans Expected Emotional Carnage. They Got Plot Armor Instead.
Season 5 promised darker storytelling, major consequences, and shocking losses. But instead, fans say the show played it too safe.

Some characters appeared to be on death’s door, only to bounce back in the next episode. Even Vecna’s victims, intense explosions, and emotional sacrifices didn’t seem to hit hard – because almost everyone lived.
One frustrated fan posted: “Stranger Things is so scared to kill off its main characters. Five seasons, and still, nobody truly important has died.”
Another wrote: “Hopper survives again. A mind literally explodes, and the guy is fine? Come on now.”
Others pointed out that for a show filled with monsters, psychic warfare, and world-ending threats, the emotional stakes should be much higher.
One viral comment said: “If nobody dies, then what are we even scared of?”
But Not Everyone Agrees…
Some fans jumped to defend the show, arguing that killing characters just for shock value isn’t good storytelling.
One wrote: “I don’t get why people are obsessed with killing main characters. It doesn’t always make a show better.”
Another added: “Real writing isn’t about death. It’s about consequences. Let them survive and deal with what they’ve been through.”
So, the debate is officially on.
Elsewhere, Off-Screen Drama Has Also Stirred Headlines
Season 5 comes with more than just fictional tension.

Millie Bobby Brown recently addressed rumors of a fallout with co-star David Harbour, after reports claimed she had filed harassment concerns. But the pair appeared close at the premiere and Brown said their bond is “stronger than ever.”
Meanwhile, Harbour’s real-life divorce from Lily Allen also made headlines, especially after Allen dropped a viral breakup album filled with cryptic lyrics.
Harbour hasn’t commented, but many believe the album hints at details from their open marriage.
Critics Are Divided Too
Season 5 arrived with the lowest Rotten Tomatoes score in the franchise’s history. While still a strong 87%, it marks a noticeable drop from past seasons.
Some reviewers called it “grim” and “uneven.” Others praised it as emotional, epic, and unexpectedly nostalgic.
One thing is certain: people are talking.
Will the Final Episodes Deliver the Punch Fans Want?
Volume 2 has yet to arrive, and with it comes the big question: Will Stranger Things go big and take risks? Or will beloved characters walk away with bruises, trauma, and a bittersweet ending—but still alive?
Some still hold hope.
One fan wrote: “They’re saving the heartbreak for last. Nobody is safe in Volume 2.”
Whether it’s shock deaths or emotional survival, all eyes are now on the final chapters.
Will Stranger Things end with tears, screams, or debate?
Maybe all three.
