Marty and Jess Ansen, a retired couple, have chosen to spend their retirement years embarking on 51 consecutive cruises, a lifestyle they found to be more cost-effective than residing in a retirement home. Their remarkable journey began in June when they boarded the Coral Princess, two years after Australia’s strict pandemic lockdowns.
Over the past year and a half, the great-grandparents have enjoyed their days exploring the world, dancing, savoring lavish buffets, and forming new friendships during their voyage. They have remained on board the 2,000-passenger cruise ship for more than 450 days and anticipate staying on the ship for a total of two years.
Marty explained in an interview with A Current Affair that he instructs his agent to “book whatever comes,” leading them to embark on 51 consecutive cruises. The couple has outlasted many fellow passengers, including several ship captains.
“The wheels change over but we stay on board,” Marty noted, with Jess adding, “We welcome the different captains on board.”
Ren van Rooyen, the hotel manager on the Coral Princess, confirmed that Marty and Jess Ansen are among the most dedicated passengers they’ve ever had. He likened their presence to family, saying, “I go away, and I come back, and it’s like coming to see my family—my mum and dad again. They’re like my second mum and dad on board.”
Their story has made them something akin to celebrities on the ship, with passengers on shorter cruises requesting the opportunity to meet them. Their inspiring journey has resonated with many people in their home country.
Marty and Jess Ansen have been cruising for decades, but it wasn’t until they realized it was more economical than residing in a retirement home that they decided to make it their full-time lifestyle. They also felt they had missed out on years of fun due to the strict Australian lockdowns.
Their current lifestyle offers numerous perks, including quality entertainment like dancing and delectable meals included in the ticket price. Jess shared, “Where else can you go? You go for dinner, you go to a show, you go dancing. Throughout the day, you have all these activities.”
Each day begins with an invigorating hour of ping pong, followed by a relaxing moment on their balcony with a couple of beers to enjoy the breathtaking views. Housekeepers ensure their room is cleaned daily, a service they have come to appreciate so much that they humorously admitted they’ve forgotten how to make a bed.
As their incredible journey continues, Marty and Jess Ansen have another eight months on board the Coral Princess before disembarking for a brief period on dry land. However, they plan to embark on another year-long cruise aboard the Crown Princess, eager to continue their adventure on the high seas.
