A wave of enthusiasm has swept through Netflix viewers who are fervently pleading for a second season of a riveting action drama that boasts a near-perfect Rotten Tomatoes score. The Heitor Dhalia-led series, filmed near the border of Brazil and Paraguay, has garnered praise as an “epic cops-and-robbers action thriller,” leaving audiences hungry for more.
The eight-part action police series, titled “Criminal Code,” unfolds a gripping narrative centered around federal police officers employing DNA traces to dismantle the world’s largest bank robbery gang. Federal officer Benício, portrayed by Rômulo Braga, leads a team of investigators tasked with utilizing DNA evidence to apprehend over 50 individuals involved in the elaborate crime.
The Netflix series, inspired by real crimes and written by Bernardo Barcellos, features an ensemble cast including Maeve Jinkings and Thomás Aquino. Netflix TUDUM sheds light on Benício’s character, describing him as a challenging figure with no partner, notorious for his rogue investigative methods. The series kicks off three months after Benício’s partner was killed in a mass prison break near the Paraguay-Brazil border.
As a group of gangs executes an armed heist in Paraguay, Benício suspects Sem Alma, the alleged murderer of his partner, to be involved. When paired with a new partner, Suellen, the duo embarks on an intense journey to crack the case, vowing to employ any off-the-books methods necessary. Simultaneously, officers from both sides of the border employ all means at their disposal, including analyzing scant DNA found in the gangs’ abandoned vehicles, to zero in on the perpetrators.
With a commendable 93 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes, viewers have heaped praise on the series, expressing their desire for a second season. One Twitter user exclaimed, “Criminal Code on Netflix is sooo good! Binged the whole 8 episodes in a day & a half. They need a second season ASAP.” Another fan compared it to the popular series Money Heist, stating, “Criminal Code is the best heist series I’ve watched since Money Heist.”
The sentiment was echoed by another viewer who declared, “Criminal Code on Netflix is GREAT TV.” Drawing comparisons to the acclaimed series Narcos, someone else added, “Criminal Code, the Brazilian police-gangster serial on Netflix is just awesome. As good as Narcos!”
In response to viewers’ fervent requests, Netflix Brazil took to social media to deliver exciting news – a second season of “Criminal Code” is officially in the works. The tweet reads, “So proud of my first Brazilian police action series. Criminal Code is renewed for a 2nd season.”
For those who haven’t experienced the thrill of “Criminal Code,” the first season is currently available for streaming on Netflix.
