Matthew Perry ‘was in Love’ with Friends Co-Star Courtney Cox

Matthew Perry, known for his iconic role as Chandler Bing on the hit TV series “Friends,” reportedly harbored strong romantic feelings for his co-star Courteney Cox, who portrayed Monica Geller, Chandler’s wife on the show. Their on-screen chemistry and the evolution of Monica and Chandler’s relationship from friends to lovers became a cornerstone of the show’s narrative, culminating in the couple’s journey toward suburban life in the final episode back in 2004.

The love story between Monica and Chandler captured the hearts of fans worldwide, but reports have surfaced suggesting that off-screen, Perry had genuine affection for Courteney. The tragic passing of the 54-year-old star, believed to have occurred at his Los Angeles residence due to a tragic incident in his jacuzzi, has led to an outpouring of tributes, though his former Friends co-stars are yet to comment on his untimely death.

During their time working together on the show, it’s been purported that Perry had deep emotions for Courteney. However, at that time, Courteney was romantically involved with her Scream co-star, David Arquette, whom she later split from in October 2010. Following this, Courteney has been linked romantically to Snow Patrol guitarist Johnny McDaid, whom she initially met through mutual friend Ed Sheeran in 2013.

Despite Courteney’s subsequent relationships, there were alleged instances of closeness between Perry and Courteney. During a reported break-up in 2015 between Courteney and Johnny, sources mentioned that Courteney sought support from Perry, stating, “It’s no surprise that Matthew was one of the first people Courteney called after Johnny left her. They’ve leaned on each other before. There isn’t any pressure to put a label on it just yet, but they’re excited to see where this might go.”

Despite the occasional rumors and reported closeness between Perry and Courteney, she rekindled her relationship with Johnny while Perry embarked on a two-year relationship with Molly Hurwitz. Yet, insiders claimed that Perry’s affection for Courteney persisted. According to a source speaking to US Weekly last year, “Matthew’s always been in love with her. Matthew has never fully been able to get over her.”

Following Perry’s passing, the official Friends account confirmed the devastating news, expressing, “We are devastated to learn of Matthew Perry’s passing. He was a true gift to us all. Our heart goes out to his family, loved ones, and all of his fans.”

The reports about Perry’s enduring feelings for Courteney alongside their on-screen camaraderie have ignited conversations and nostalgia among Friends enthusiasts, underscoring the lasting impact of the iconic show and the fondness audiences continue to hold for the beloved characters and their real-life counterparts.
