Kevin’s parents forgetting him has long stretched credibility for some viewers. The film explains the mistake through missed alarms and a rushed airport departure.
The family miscounts children during the chaos and boards the plane without Kevin. While unlikely, the explanation is generally accepted by fans.
Another question, however, has lingered far longer. Viewers have repeatedly asked how Kevin’s parents could afford their large Chicago-area mansion.
The McCallister family appears extremely wealthy throughout the film. Their home accommodates 15 relatives on the night before Christmas.
The entire extended family also travels on an all-expenses-paid holiday to France.
The house itself is located in an affluent neighbourhood. That detail attracts burglars Harry and Marv, known as the Wet Bandits.
The pair plan to target multiple homes in the area before Christmas. For many fans, the size and location of the property raised questions.

Culkin shares his theory
Culkin, now 45, recently offered his own explanation.
Speaking to Postmedia, he shared what he believes Kevin’s parents did for work.
The actor said he has thought about the question for years. He suggested the answer lies in high-earning professional careers.
“I think his father was a corporate lawyer,” Culkin said. He explained that such a job would justify the family’s lifestyle.
“That’s how they were able to afford such nice things and live in a nice neighbourhood,” he added. Culkin then turned his attention to Kevin’s mother.
“His mother was an interior decorator,” he said. Culkin suggested this explained the home’s stylish design. The house is frequently praised by viewers for its layout and décor.
His comments quickly circulated among fans online. Many said the explanation finally made sense.
Culkin’s theory aligns with long-standing fan speculation.
Over the years, viewers have suggested jobs ranging from finance to fashion. None were ever confirmed within the film itself.
The script never explicitly states the parents’ professions. That absence helped fuel the debate.
Director offers a different memory
The film’s director, Chris Columbus, previously addressed the same question.
Speaking on The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards podcast, Columbus said the issue was discussed during production. He admitted his memory of the decision was unclear.
“Back then, John and I had a conversation about it,” Columbus said, referring to writer John Hughes.
He said they decided on the parents’ jobs at the time. However, Columbus said he could not fully recall the father’s role.
He did remember discussions about Kevin’s mother. Columbus said the character was considered a successful fashion designer.
He noted mannequins were used in the basement during filming. That detail supported the idea of a fashion-related career.
“The father could have, based on John Hughes’ own experience, worked in advertising,” Columbus said.
He added that Hughes had worked in that industry himself. Despite this, Columbus said he no longer remembers the final decision.
While there is no definitive on-screen answer, Culkin’s comments have given fans closure. His explanation fits both the family’s wealth and the home’s appearance.
For many viewers, the mystery now feels settled. As audiences continue rewatching Home Alone, one of its longest-running questions finally has a plausible answer.
