Pop stars Justin Bieber and Liam Payne were frequently compared throughout their careers, leading to a competitive rivalry between the two. However, after Liam openly discussed the similarities between them, the two managed to settle their differences through a heartfelt conversation. By bonding over their shared experiences of growing up in the spotlight, they forged a friendship. Following Liam’s tragic death last week, Justin paid a heartfelt tribute to his late friend.
Liam, aged 31, passed away after falling from a third-floor balcony at the Casa Sur Hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentina, last Wednesday. In the aftermath of his shocking death, many celebrities, including his former One Direction bandmates Zayn Malik, Louis Tomlinson, Harry Styles, and Niall Horan, alongside fans, expressed their grief and shared tributes to the late singer.
Justin Bieber honored Liam by posting a touching montage on his Instagram Stories with the caption “rest easy Liam.” The video featured clips of fan memorials from around the world, where fans left cards, flowers, balloons, and personal messages in honor of Liam. An AI-generated voiceover in the video said, “Just remember, you are allowed to grieve as a fan. You are allowed to love someone you’ve never met. You are allowed to admire someone for their art.”
Years after being told he “could be as big as Bieber one day” during his X Factor audition, Liam recounted his side of the story on Logan Paul’s Impaulsive podcast. The singer revealed that one evening, while intoxicated on Instagram, someone mentioned Justin Bieber, to which Liam responded, “the only thing between me and him is I haven’t been arrested”—referring to Justin’s past DUI arrest. Liam explained that while he would occasionally cross paths with Justin at award shows, he never intended to insult him, though the comment “started some beef.”
During the podcast, Liam expressed empathy for Justin, stating, “I’ve always felt for you.” He added, “Number one, I’ve done all the things that you’ve done, and I’ve never been caught for any of them… number two, I’ve always really felt for you, mate, and I think in our situation we all suffer from the same disease.”
Liam also acknowledged the advantage of having the support of his One Direction bandmates, something Justin lacked as a solo artist. He said, “I know in your camp you’re you and there’s no one like you, so you can’t turn around and have that shoulder.” Justin was reportedly touched by Liam’s remarks, telling him that his words gave him “chills.”
After Justin’s tribute to Liam, fans flooded the original video with their condolences. One fan wrote, “Justin reposted, thank you for validating my grief over Liam and please take care of yourself, Justin. I love you.” Another commented, “Beliebers are joining Directioners in their grief,” while another fan praised Justin, saying, “Justin Bieber is a real one for showing his empathy.”
According to local media reports, Liam’s body is expected to remain in Argentina for about 10 to 15 days, pending the results of toxicology tests. Once the investigation concludes, his remains will be returned to his family in England.
