In a surprising revelation, actress Kristen Bell shared that her eight and six-year-old daughters have tasted non-alcoholic beer at home. While this parenting choice might raise some eyebrows, there’s a heartwarming reason behind it.
Bell’s husband, Dax Shepard, is a recovering alcoholic and has been on his sobriety journey for years. As a result, the family has non-alcoholic beer in their home to accommodate Shepard’s preferences. Bell humorously recalled an incident when their eldest daughter, Lincoln, was intrigued by her dad’s beverage and ended up having her first taste at a very young age.
“She was pawing at it, and sometimes she’d suck the rim of it. So, I think it feels to her like something special, something daddy, something family,” Bell explained during an appearance on the Kelly Clarkson Show.
Although the unconventional practice may have caused a few raised eyebrows when Lincoln attempted to order non-alcoholic beer at restaurants, Bell remains unapologetic. She humorously remarked that while it might surprise some, she’s not doing anything wrong, and it’s not an issue for her if others choose to judge.
In fact, Bell has been a pillar of support for her husband throughout his sobriety journey, even serving as his sponsor. In 2020, Shepard candidly revealed on his Armchair Expert podcast that he had relapsed after 16 years of sobriety, candidly admitting his struggles with Vicodin. This brave admission highlighted the reality that addiction is a continuous battle, and even those with years of sobriety can face challenges.
Despite the setback, Shepard worked diligently to get back on track, and the support he received from listeners of his podcast played a significant role in his recovery, as he shared during an interview with Today.
As a family, Bell and Shepard are navigating the complexities of addiction with transparency and empathy, ensuring that their children understand the importance of compassion and understanding when it comes to mental health struggles. Their approach, while unconventional, demonstrates their unwavering commitment to each other and the unity they share as a family. And in the end, that’s what matters most
