Julia Roberts Addressed Major Plot Hole Viewers Pointed Out from Netflix’s Leave the World Behind

Seasoned Netflix viewers are known for scrutinizing every detail of the content they binge-watch, and it seems they didn’t miss a beat with Julia Roberts’ latest film, “Leave the World Behind.” Addressing a potential plot hole ahead of viewer speculation, Roberts candidly spoke about the unique connection between her character and her iconic cameo in “Friends.”

In the apocalyptic thriller, Roberts plays advertising executive Amanda Sandford, seeking respite from modern life on a family vacation disrupted by a mysterious blackout. As chaos ensues, her tech-obsessed daughter, portrayed by Farrah Mackenzie, faces a dilemma when she realizes there’s no internet to watch the final episode of “Friends.”

Interestingly, the teenage character, engrossed in the sitcom, fails to recognize that her on-screen mother, Julia Roberts, once made a cameo in “Friends” back in 1996. In an episode titled “The One After The Super Bowl Part 2,” Roberts played Susie Moss, Chandler’s love interest and childhood friend.

During an interview with Entertainment Tonight, Roberts fondly reminisced about her time on “Friends,” specifically the Super Bowl episode. She shared positive thoughts and feelings about the cast, emphasizing their welcoming nature during her one-off appearance on the show.

Mahershala Ali, Roberts’ co-star in “Leave the World Behind,” acknowledged the unique connection, stating, “It’s beautiful he could sort of be honored in that way or the show sort of be honored, coincidentally, in this time so it’s kind of nice that it has a little space in there.”

Regarding the passing of Matthew Perry, Roberts expressed heartfelt sentiments, emphasizing how the sudden loss of someone so young is heartbreaking. Reflecting on the experience, she emphasized the importance of appreciating life and moving forward in a positive manner.

Addressing the potential plot hole and the crossover between “Friends” and “Leave the World Behind,” director and producer Sam Esmail provided a meta-explanation. He suggested that in the universe of the film, Julia Roberts is not playing Amanda but rather Rose’s mom, Amanda Sanford. The passing resemblance between Roberts and the mom might go unnoticed by Rose, adding a unique layer to the narrative.

Esmail acknowledged the meta-convoluted nature of the explanation but highlighted that emotionally, the connection adds to the viewer’s satisfaction, bringing a smile to their faces as they recognize the unexpected crossover between the two projects.
