Jennifer Aniston’s Four-Word Warning to Matthew Perry that ‘Saved His Life’

Friends star Matthew Perry, renowned for his portrayal of Chandler Bing in the iconic US sitcom, received a critical four-word warning from his late co-star, Jennifer Aniston, alerting him to the issue she perceived as a “secret” battle with alcohol during the peak of their fame.

Following Perry’s tragic passing at his Los Angeles residence, where he was found dead after reportedly drowning in his hot tub, investigations have concluded no presence of drugs or any indication of foul play at the scene.

In a candid revelation regarding his struggle with substance abuse during the pinnacle of his 2000s success, the 54-year-old Perry, in an interview last year, disclosed Aniston as the sole individual to directly confront his drinking habits. Aniston, known for portraying Rachel Green, approached Perry on set and bluntly uttered the words: “We know you’re drinking.”

Reflecting on this significant encounter, Perry confessed in an interview with ABC News’ Diane Sawyer: “At the time I should have been the toast of the town, I was in a dark room meeting nothing but drug dealers and completely alone. [Aniston] was the one that reached out the most.” He emphasized the magnitude of her intervention as a “scary moment,” expressing profound gratitude for her candid approach.

During this period, Perry faced a harrowing situation, being given a mere 2% chance of survival due to opioid abuse leading to a burst colon and a subsequent two-week coma. His ordeal entailed enduring 14 surgeries on his abdomen and necessitated a nine-month period with a colostomy bag.

The actor’s battle with drug and alcohol addiction significantly impacted his tenure on Friends. Having grappled with addiction to Vicodin, Perry completed a 28-day detox program in 1997. Subsequently, he re-entered rehab in February 2001, addressing addiction to Vicodin, methadone, amphetamines, and alcohol. These personal struggles were further detailed in his memoir released the previous year.

In a conversation with People magazine in the past, Perry disclosed his numerous rehab stints, totaling 15 times between 1997 and 2011, in an ardent pursuit of sobriety. Recounting the dire situation he faced, Perry highlighted the doctors’ prognosis of his slim two percent chance of survival. His treatment involved the implementation of an ECMO machine, a last-ditch resort that manages the heart and lung functions. Perry reflected that no one typically survives this dire scenario.

Meanwhile, Aniston articulated her perspective on Perry’s emotional turmoil during a pre-reunion interview on the Today show in 2021. She conveyed her realization of the immense anxiety and self-imposed pressure Perry endured, particularly in pursuit of eliciting laughter, coupled with the devastating impact he felt when unable to achieve it.

Friends’ official statement, posted on Friends’ X (formerly Twitter) account, expressed profound devastation at Matthew Perry’s untimely passing, acknowledging his remarkable contribution and extending heartfelt sympathies to his family, loved ones, and legions of fans.
