Jaguars Star Comes Out As Gay In Historic Announcement

Having been an integral part of the Jaguars since 2021, Maxen shared his decision to come out with Outsports, driven by a profound desire to inspire others while embracing his authentic self.

“I yearn to shed the burden of secrecy,” Maxen confided to Outsports, emphasizing his wish to live truthfully without concealing his relationships or who he chooses to share his life with.

By being vocal in his support for people’s freedom to lead their lives as they wish, Maxen aims to foster an environment where fear of judgment no longer inhibits one’s pursuit of happiness.

Maxen’s journey in football began years ago when he played for Division III Western Connecticut State University during his college years, followed by a career as a strength coach at Baylor and Vanderbilt.

Reflecting on his past, Maxen acknowledged wrestling with his sexuality during his college days, but he is now hopeful that the players on the Jaguars will respond positively to his candid revelation.

“My accomplishments in football should silence any doubts,” Maxen asserted humorously, emphasizing his ability to maintain light-hearted camaraderie with his peers.

A pivotal turning point for Maxen was witnessing his colleagues within the organization introduce their families, which instilled in him the longing to do the same.

Maxen has been in a committed relationship with his boyfriend, Nick, for over two years, and the inability to share this aspect of his life filled him with a sense of guilt and inner conflict. Seeking guidance and inspiration, he reached out to Carl Nassib, the trailblazing NFL player who came out a year earlier.

“I once harbored anger and self-hatred, but it stemmed from living my life according to other people’s expectations, not my own,” Maxen reflected on his journey of self-discovery and acceptance.

The Jacksonville Jaguars’ director of player development, Marcus Pollard, showered Maxen with praise, highlighting his hard work, dedication, and success as a strength and conditioning coach in an ever-diversifying environment.

As the training camp opened for Jaguars rookies, the rest of the team, including Maxen, prepared to report for their upcoming season. Last season was one of triumph for the Jaguars, as they secured the AFC South with a 9-8 record and celebrated a memorable victory against the Los Angeles Chargers in the wild card round before ultimately falling to the Kansas City Chiefs in the second round.

In Kevin Maxen’s courageous declaration, the world witnessed a significant step forward for inclusivity and acceptance in professional sports. His bravery will undoubtedly pave the way for others to embrace their true selves without fear of judgment, fostering a more welcoming and compassionate athletic community for generations to come.
