Jada Pinkett Smith has revealed her intentions to stay married to Will Smith, despite the fact that the couple has been separated for seven years. This surprising revelation came as a shock to many in the entertainment world, as the two had continued to present themselves as a couple to the public. Jada’s announcement coincided with the impending release of her new book, “Worthy,” which is scheduled for release next week.
Jada shared insights into how she first crossed paths with Will in Hollywood during an interview with People. Following Will’s divorce from his first wife, Sheree Zampino, he reached out to Jada and asked, “Who are you going out with?” When he discovered that she was single, Will promptly responded with, “Well, you’re going out with me now.” Reflecting on that moment, Jada admitted, “Can you believe I fell for that? Will called me up one day and said, ‘Hit me when you get to L.A.’ and then … click. And I was like, ‘Whoa. Okay.’ And so when I got to L.A., I called him. I haven’t been able to get rid of him since.”
Despite the passage of time and the complexities of their relationship, Jada emphasized that they are still in the process of figuring things out. She added, “We’re still figuring it out. We’ve been doing some really heavy-duty work together. We just have a deep love for each other, and we are going to figure out what that looks like for us.” Jada expressed gratitude for the support of their children, Jaden and Willow, as well as Trey, Will’s child from his previous marriage with Zampino. She remarked, “My children, they’re little gurus. They’ve taught me a deep sense of self-acceptance. They love every part of me. The level of love, unconditional love that they have for me and their dad. It’s one thing to want to be the person that gives that unconditional love. And then there’s being the recipient of that.”
Jada’s decision to remain married to Will stems from a promise she made to herself. She explained the reasons behind the breakdown of their marriage, stating, “By the time we got to 2016, we were just exhausted with trying. I think we were both still stuck in our fantasy of what we thought the other person should be.” While contemplating divorce, she ultimately decided against it. “I made a promise that there will never be a reason for us to get a divorce,” she added. “We will work through whatever. And I just haven’t been able to break that promise.”
Jada’s interview with Hoda Kotb on the Today show is scheduled to air on NBC at 8pm ET on Friday, October 13. Her candid revelations about her enduring commitment to her marriage have shed light on her perspective on love, partnership, and self-acceptance.
