Husband Spends Family’s $150,000 Savings On ‘Freakiest Girl On Onlyfans’ While His Wife Was Battling Cancer

A Colorado woman has said her husband spent $150,000 of their family savings on OnlyFans while she was undergoing cancer treatment.

Melinda Lam, a 46-year-old pharmacist, said she uncovered the spending in December 2021. The discovery came after a credit card payment for her son’s karate lessons was declined.

Lam said she checked the couple’s shared financial accounts after the payment failed. She found at least six credit cards had been maxed out. Nearly $40,000 had also been withdrawn from their savings. One statement repeatedly listed charges from OnlyFans.

“It says OnlyFans, OnlyFans, OnlyFans,” Lam recalled. At the time, she was undergoing chemotherapy for breast cancer. She later said her husband ultimately spent $150,000 on creators on the subscription-based platform. She shared financial records with Reuters to support the claim.

Lam said she was preparing to file for bankruptcy and move forward with a divorce. “Not only was it shocking,” she said, “it was devastating.” She described the financial loss as deeply damaging during an already difficult period.

Platform growth and wider scrutiny

OnlyFans is a subscription platform where creators sell exclusive content to paying subscribers. Supporters describe it as empowering and financially rewarding for creators. Nurses, teachers, police officers, and athletes have used the site to earn additional income.

The platform has experienced significant growth in recent years. OnlyFans reported $1.3 billion in revenue in 2023. Top creators reportedly earn millions annually. The business model allows users to subscribe, tip, and purchase customized content.

Reuters investigations previously highlighted concerns about illegal material appearing on the platform. Reports cited police complaints from more than 250 large US law enforcement agencies. Allegations included nonconsensual content and child exploitation material.

Police records also described broader social impacts. These included financial ruin, damaged reputations, and family breakdowns. Researchers have noted the platform’s influence on social norms and relationships.

Meagan Tyler, a researcher at La Trobe University in Melbourne, said the site has affected everyday life. She said its influence extends beyond users themselves. OnlyFans did not respond to questions about Lam’s case. On its website, the company states it aims to provide a safe platform for creators.

Chief executive Keily Blair has described the site as a supportive community. She said creators and subscribers often have positive interactions. Critics, however, point to cases where use of the platform has led to personal harm.

Marriage breakdown and allegations of abuse

Lam said she initially avoided confronting her husband because of her health. She described feeling exhausted from chemotherapy and radiation. While reviewing a home computer, she discovered many payments were directed to an OnlyFans creator named Laura Shine, based in Bogotá, Colombia.

Shine’s profile described her as “the FREAKIEST Girl on OnlyFans.” Lam said some funds were withdrawn from her husband’s pension. According to Lam, the financial strain contributed to the collapse of their marriage.

Lam alleged that when she confronted her husband in February 2022, he assaulted her. Court records show she accused him of slamming her head against a car window and punching her.

The following month, she contacted police after he allegedly threw their five-year-old son to the ground.

Police reports cited major debt and emotional damage. Lam later moved out with her son. According to an arrest warrant affidavit, she alleged another assault occurred when she picked up her son from a visit. She said she was chased into a bathroom and assaulted.

Lam was hospitalized after that incident. She later dropped the assault charges, citing the toll of her cancer treatment. Her husband denied the allegations to police and did not respond to media requests for comment.

Lam said she has since undergone surgery to remove a tumor and is expected to survive. She described the spending as “the ultimate betrayal”, she said dealing with financial loss during cancer treatment was especially painful.

She also criticized the platform’s role, saying it profits without considering personal consequences. “It’s just money in their pocket,” she said. “They don’t think about the repercussions.”
