Following his surgery in June of the same year to remove a cancerous tumour in his prostate gland, Len expressed optimism, describing everything as “gorgeously good.”
Tragically, 14 years after his initial diagnosis, prostate cancer once again reared its formidable head. This time, it had metastasised to his bones, ultimately leading to his passing. The official cause of death was recorded as ‘metastatic prostate cancer.’ In medical terms, metastatic prostate cancer is often referred to as ‘advanced prostate cancer.’ It tends to spread, most commonly to lymph nodes in various parts of the body, and it can also affect the bones or even other organs such as the lungs.
Len’s courage in facing this formidable opponent was evident in his decision to carry on with his commitments despite his diagnosis. Back in 2009, he could have chosen to withdraw from his professional obligations, but he chose to complete filming for DWTS before pursuing treatment. In an interview, Len reflected on how vulnerable he felt upon learning of the diagnosis but emphasized that he was “right as rain” after the successful operation. His determination and resilience were qualities that continued to define his life even in the face of adversity.
Five months before his passing, Len made the heartfelt decision to retire from DWTS, citing a desire to “spend more time with my grandchildren and family back in Britain.” Little did the world know that his retirement would be followed by a heartbreaking farewell.
