Donald Trump Rips Into Megan Rapinoe After World Cup Loss

Former President Donald Trump didn’t hold back his opinions as he took to Truth Social to criticize the U.S. Women’s National Team (USWNT) following their unexpected early exit from the World Cup. In his characteristic style, Trump directed his comments towards the team’s perceived “wokeness” and suggested a correlation between their political beliefs and their sporting performance.

Trump seized the opportunity to connect the USWNT’s loss to broader national issues, stating, “The ‘shocking and totally unexpected’ loss by the U.S. Women’s Soccer Team to Sweden is fully emblematic of what is happening to our once great Nation under Crooked Joe Biden.” He further criticized certain players on the team for being openly critical of America, insinuating that their political stance played a role in their performance downfall.

Highlighting what he saw as a disparity between the USWNT’s behavior and that of other participating countries, Trump exclaimed, “No other country behaved in such a manner, or even close. WOKE EQUALS FAILURE.” This comment reflected his long-standing concern with what he perceives as excessive political correctness and social activism.

Trump’s contentious history with Megan Rapinoe, a prominent member of the USWNT, resurfaced as he singled her out for criticism. Recalling Rapinoe’s decision not to visit the White House after the 2019 World Cup win and her public support for various social causes, Trump took a swipe at her performance, remarking, “Nice shot Megan, the USA is going to Hell!!!! MAGA.”

Rapinoe’s activism has been a consistent aspect of her public persona, advocating for equal pay, LGBTQ+ rights, and social justice issues. She gained attention for kneeling during the national anthem, a gesture that drew Trump’s ire during his presidency.

In contrast to Trump’s critical stance, President Joe Biden offered a message of support and encouragement to the team. He expressed pride in their accomplishments and resilience, praising them for their “grit and determination – on and off the field.” Biden’s response reflected a more positive and inclusive approach, focusing on the team’s ability to inspire Americans through their efforts both in sports and beyond.

As the USWNT navigates the aftermath of their World Cup exit, the diverse range of reactions from political figures highlights the intersection of sports and sociopolitical discourse. While Trump’s remarks emphasize his view that the team’s outspoken activism hindered their success, Biden’s response underscores the potential for sports to unite and uplift communities, transcending individual performance outcomes. The contrasting viewpoints surrounding the USWNT serve as a reminder of the complex ways in which sports can reflect and engage with broader societal conversations.
