Comedian Trolls ‘Moms for Liberty’ By Reading Bible Passages at School Board Meeting

Moms for Liberty had garnered attention for its campaigns against school curriculums addressing LGBTQ+ rights, race, and discrimination. Yet, the group faced criticism for advocating “Christian values” while seemingly overlooking the often brutal and sexually explicit content found within the pages of the Bible.

Masterson, with a touch of irony and humor, chose to bring these contrasting positions into the spotlight. He began his address by presenting a book that was readily available to children in school libraries, describing it as “filled with overt sexual acts of violence, it celebrates mass killings, and it’s being used to indoctrinate our children.”

The passages he cited were provocative and intended to highlight the complexity of the Bible’s content. One of his selections was from Exodus Chapter 4, verses 24-26, recounting a peculiar narrative involving Moses and Sephora. Masterson quoted, “The Lord tried to kill Moses, but Sephora used a sharpened stone and cut off their son’s foreskin and rubbed the bloody ring on Moses his feet, saying ‘You’re now my bridegroom.’ This made the Lord leave Moses alone.”

He proceeded to read from Exodus Chapter 21, verses 20-21, addressing a passage that outlined the treatment of slaves. The text indicated that if a slave was beaten to the point of death by their owner, the owner should face punishment. However, if the slave survived a day or two after the severe beating, they were to return to their labor, as they were considered the property of their owner.

Masterson concluded his recitation by sharing a verse from Genesis Chapter 6, verse 7, which depicted an account of divine regret and sorrow. In this passage, the Lord expressed remorse for creating human beings and declared an intent to obliterate all of humanity, along with the animal kingdom and flying creatures. It was a reflection of divine disappointment in creation.

Masterson’s use of these verses was undoubtedly provocative and intended to draw attention to the Bible’s often complex and multifaceted content. The juxtaposition of these passages with the conservative values espoused by Moms for Liberty highlighted the challenges and contradictions that can arise when attempting to reconcile religious texts with modern social and educational values.

The comedian’s actions sparked a conversation about the interpretation and selective use of religious texts in contemporary discussions, especially in educational settings, where various perspectives and worldviews coexist. While some saw his actions as a satirical critique, others may view them as a controversial and thought-provoking approach to address the role of religion in public discourse.
