Chris Brown has received an honorary Doctor of Philosophy degree in Visual and Performing Arts.
The recognition was awarded by Harvest Christian University during a ceremony in Los Angeles.
The R&B singer shared the moment with followers on social media. Brown posted images showing him wearing academic robes and holding the certificate. He captioned the post: “I did a thing.”
The honorary degree recognised Brown’s work across music, dance, visual art and live performance. It also marked more than two decades of influence across several creative fields. Brown has been active in entertainment since the mid-2000s.
The certificate named Brown as a recipient of an honorary Doctor of Philosophy degree. The award was listed in the field of Visual and Performing Arts. The presentation took place on May 23, 2026.

Images from the ceremony showed Brown standing with university representatives. He wore a black academic gown with purple detailing. He also wore a matching cap while posing with the certificate.
Recognition follows album discussion
The honour came as Brown’s latest music continued to generate discussion online. His album Brown had received mixed reactions from listeners and critics. The response prompted wider debate about public criticism of artists.
Tank recently defended Brown after criticism of the album. He said some comments had crossed the line from opinion into disrespect. He also said artists could accept constructive feedback from listeners.
Tank said the issue was not criticism itself. He said the problem was when people used opinion to disguise hate. His comments were made during the album’s wider online discussion.
“Artists do their best to do art that is personal to them in the best way possible for you to receive it. We appreciate the love and support but we can also understand constructive criticism. The problem is most of you offer destructive criticism. You disguise your hate for ‘opinion’.”

Tank also praised the quality of Brown’s latest creative output. He said the music, visuals and promotion had been strong during the project’s rollout. He described the period as part of the Brown era.
“In my opinion this is some of CB’s best work! From music, to visuals, to promo this man is nailing every moment like i’ve never seen,” he wrote.
Brown’s career spans several creative areas
