Celine Dion’s sister recently provided an update on the singer’s health amidst her battle with stiff person syndrome.
Speaking to Le Journal de Montreal, Claudette Dion revealed that Celine, aged 55, is under the care of their sister Linda and is closely collaborating with specialized researchers focusing on this rare condition.
“We haven’t found any medication that works, but maintaining hope is crucial,” Claudette said. “I genuinely believe that she mostly needs rest. She always puts in extraordinary effort when performing, striving to be the best and excel at her craft. However, there comes a point where your heart and body send you signals that demand attention. It’s essential to listen.”
Although Claudette isn’t always able to directly communicate with Celine, she receives regular updates from Linda, who lives with her. Linda assures Claudette that Celine is working diligently and staying in touch with leading researchers in the field of this uncommon ailment.
In December 2022, Celine publicly disclosed her diagnosis of the rare and incurable neurological disorder, leading her to postpone some of her shows. On Instagram, she candidly addressed her fans, expressing her eagerness to return to the stage and speak to them in person. “As you know, I’ve always been an open book, and I wasn’t ready to say anything before, but I’m ready now,” she shared.
She further explained the condition, which affects a very small proportion of the population, about one in a million people. Stiff person syndrome, as highlighted by the Stiff Person Syndrome Research Foundation, results in muscle spasms, muscle rigidity, chronic pain, and heightened anxiety.
In May, Celine made the difficult decision to cancel her Courage World Tour. She expressed deep disappointment at having to make this choice and apologized to her fans. Citing her ongoing health challenges, she acknowledged the difficulty of touring, even when one is at their best. However, she emphasized her determination not to give up and eagerly looks forward to reuniting with her beloved audience once she has regained her strength.
The support and care from her family, particularly her sister Linda, have been invaluable during this challenging period. Celine remains optimistic and determined to find solutions and treatments to manage her condition effectively.
