Emma Heming Willis, the wife of renowned actor Bruce Willis, has expressed her frustration over what she considers “disrespectful” comments made by doctors regarding her husband’s condition, frontotemporal dementia (FTD).
This comes less than a year after the heartbreaking revelation of Bruce Willis’ diagnosis.
In a series of social media posts during World FTD Awareness Week, Emma highlighted the importance of recognizing FTD as a distinct diagnosis and not simply categorizing it as “other dementia.”
Emma, a model and advocate, shared her thoughts on Instagram, explaining her motivation to raise awareness about FTD.
She emphasized the need for a cure or treatment for this devastating disease and urged her followers to join in raising their voices to make a difference.
She stated, “At the end of the day, what I would love to see is a cure, a treatment for this disease. And if we don’t raise our voices, they’re just gonna run right past us. So continue to raise your voice.”
In subsequent posts on her stories, Emma expressed her concern about the tendency to use broad terminology when discussing different forms of dementia. She pointed out that doctors and the media often refer to Alzheimer’s as the primary form of dementia and categorize others, including FTD, as “other dementia.” Emma firmly objected to this classification and its implications, emphasizing that FTD is a distinct and very real disease.
She passionately asserted, “So FTD is the ‘other dementia,’ and let me tell you something about that disease; it is real, it is out there, and it will bring you to your knees. I think that it is an absolute disservice and absolutely disrespectful for these ‘other dementias’ to be put in that category. I think it’s really important for us to know what these diseases are like vascular, like Lewy body, like FTD.”
Clearly frustrated by the use of such terminology, she concluded her post by urging for accurate labeling, stating, “Call it what it is because that is where the confusion lies; when people think of dementia, they automatically think of Alzheimer’s. I do not want to see this disease and our ‘other dementias’ swept under the rug anymore.”
Emma Heming Willis has been a dedicated advocate for raising awareness about FTD since announcing her husband’s diagnosis in February. FTD is a rare form of dementia that affects both the frontal and temporal lobes of the brain, leading to memory problems, speech difficulties, organizational challenges, and physical issues such as muscle weakness.
Although Bruce Willis has retired from acting, his family, including ex-wife Demi Moore, has been sharing updates about his condition with concerned fans. Emma’s passionate advocacy aims to shed light on FTD and ensure that it receives the recognition and respect it deserves, separate from the more commonly known Alzheimer’s disease.
