Brooke Shields broke down in tears when talking about why her mother let her star in intimate scenes when she was a child.
The 59-year-old actor starred as a child model and actor in such movies as Pretty Baby, The Blue Lagoon and Endless Love.
In modern times, Shield’s earlier work has been questioned after the decision was made for her to star alongside grown male co-stars.
During a documentary named Pretty Baby: Brooke Shields, the star recalled her own mothers decision to allow her to be involved in intimate scenes.
In the movie, Shields played a child prostitute who lived in New Orleans. She was seen kissing Keith Carradine (who was 27) as well as appearing nude in some other scenes.
Shields’ mother was present while filming and told her child it was ‘make-believe’.
Shield’s own grown children, Rowan and Grier were appalled by this, asking: “Would you have let us [do that] at the age of 11?” to which the actor broke down in tears and said ‘no’.
When Shields was 14, she appeared in The Blue Lagoon, another sexualised role for the teen.
She shared: “That was hard for me, to not justify my mum to them,”
“I mean, I could say, ‘Oh, it was the time back then,’ or ‘Oh, it was art.’ But I don’t know why she thought it was all right. I don’t know.”
“Everyone always wanted me to be angry with her,” Shields said. “But anger was just too sad for me to take when I looked at how insecure she was.”
