Kylie Jenner has officially been dethroned as Instagram’s most followed woman.
The ongoing social media drama of 2023 has caught the attention of many, and it involves none other than Selena Gomez, who has now become the most followed woman on Instagram. At the time of writing, the singer has amassed over 417 million followers while the reality star has 391 million.
The drama started when Selena shared a post on Instagram, admitting that she had over-laminated her eyebrows.
Shortly after, Kylie Jenner posted a zoomed-in image of her own brows with the caption: “This was an accident ?????”. To make matters worse, Jenner then posted a snap of herself and Hailey Bieber zooming in on their eyebrows during a FaceTime call.
Some people accused Jenner and Bieber of being childish, which prompted the makeup mogul to deny any allegations of wrongdoing.
However, this ‘beef’ is more complex than it may seem, as Selena was previously body-shamed after photos of her in a bikini were shared online in January. She fought back against the negative comments, saying: “I love my body.”
Hailey Bieber uploaded a TikTok video with friends Kendall Jenner and Justine Skye, miming along to a popular soundbite that goes: “And I’m not saying she deserved it, but God’s timing is always right.”
Some fans believed it was a dig at Selena, but Hailey denied any allegations, saying: “I never comment on this type of thing, but we were just having a girls night and did a random TikTok sound for fun. It’s not directed at anyone.”
In February, Selena took a brief break from social media, telling her fans that “this was silly” and that she was “too old for this.”
Before her announcement, the singer stood up for her friend Taylor Swift after a video of Hailey and Method Man appeared to criticize Swift. In the clip, Method Man joked about Swift’s songs, teasing a “rap battle full of the meanest lyrics about a celebrity since Taylor Swift’s last album.” As Method Man mentioned the ‘Shake It Off’ singer, Hailey stuck out her tongue and pretended to put her finger in her throat as if to make herself sick. After the clip was shared online, Gomez defended Swift and wrote: “So sorry, my best friend is and continues to be one of the best in the game.”
