Joaquin Phoenix Breaks Silence On Ending Of Joker 2 After Mass Walkouts

SPOILERS!

Joaquin Phoenix has broken his silence on the ending of Joker 2 after many fans walked out before the end.

The musical number received a shocking 33% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Joker: Folie a Deux is a rejection of the typical Joker persona as Arthur Fleck throws it away and loses his supporters, including Lee Quinzel, played by Lady Gaga.

Joker confesses to his crimes and the courtroom he is taken to is bombed by his followers. He is then recaptured and taken back to Arkham Asylum.

When he arrives, he is approached by another inmate who claims he wants to tell Arthur a joke and kills him by stabbing him with a make-shift knife.

It is implied that after he dies, the killer will go on to become the joker.

Speaking about the ending, Phoenix shared with IGN:

“There’s a warmth in that scene, which is nice.

“That’s all that I was thinking about that I was after, is here’s this young man who’s telling me a joke and he’s nervous to tell me the joke, I can tell that he’s nervous, and I’m going to hear him out.

“And it’s a pretty good setup.”

Director Todd Phillips said: “I think Arthur has found peace with the idea, with the struggle that it’s okay to be yourself.

“And that’s really what he’s always struggled with, you know what I mean? I like to think he died at peace in a way being himself.”
