Diane Keaton’s Cause of Death Revealed at 79

Hollywood is mourning the loss of one of its brightest stars.

Diane Keaton, the Oscar-winning actress beloved for Annie Hall, Father of the Bride, and Something’s Gotta Give, passed away on October 11. She was 79.

Family Statement

The Keaton family released a statement to People, thanking fans for their support during a difficult time.

“The Keaton family are very grateful for the extraordinary messages of love and support they have received these past few days on behalf of their beloved Diane,” the statement read.

She is survived by her two children, Dexter, 29, and Duke, 25.

Her family has now confirmed her cause of death: pneumonia.

Though famously private, Keaton occasionally spoke about her fears of aging and leaving her kids behind.

In a 2012 interview with AARP, she reflected on her parents’ health struggles and her hopes to remain present for her children.

“I’m very aware that my dad died when he was 68, and my mother was in her early 70s when her brain really started to go,” she said at the time.

“When I think about my kids in their 20s and 30s, and me in my 70s and 80s, I worry about that, definitely. I want to be there for them.”

Hollywood Tributes Pour In

Following her passing, tributes from co-stars and friends highlighted her humor, originality, and generosity.

Bette Midler, who worked with Keaton in The First Wives Club, described her as “hilarious, a complete original, and completely without guile.”

Kate Hudson, whose mother Goldie Hawn also starred in the same film, posted simply: “We love you so much Diane.”

Kimberly Williams-Paisley, who played her daughter in Father of the Bride, wrote: “Working with you will always be one of the highlights of my life. Thank you for your kindness, your generosity, your talent, and above all, your laughter.”

Mandy Moore, who played her daughter in Because I Said So, called it “the honor of a lifetime” to work alongside her.

“They say don’t meet your heroes, but I got to work with one of mine and even call her ‘mom’ for a few months,” she wrote on Instagram.

“What an incandescent human Di is and was. I am so sad she’s gone… it felt like she’d be here forever, dazzling us with her talent and charm (and her style, c’mon)!!!”

Moore ended with: “One of the very best to ever do it. All my love to her children and loved ones.”

A Lasting Legacy

Keaton’s career spanned five decades. From her early roles in Woody Allen films to becoming Hollywood’s go-to romantic lead, she remained timeless.

Her signature turtlenecks, witty humor, and refusal to conform made her both a fashion and cultural icon.

For many, her passing feels like the end of an era. But her films, her words, and her influence will endure.
