One of the internet’s most wholesome traditions continues a decade later.
Ten years ago, a wrong number turned into one of the most heartwarming internet stories ever.
Arizona grandmother Wanda Dench sent a text message to who she believed was her grandson, inviting him to Thanksgiving dinner.
But instead of reaching her grandson, the message landed on the phone of teenager Jamal Hinton, who was unknown to her at the time.
Curious, Jamal replied and asked for a photo to confirm who was texting him.
Wanda sent a selfie, and Jamal jokingly responded, “You’re not my grandma. But can I still get a plate?”
Her now legendary reply: “Of course you can. That’s what grandmas do… feed everyone.”

And just like that, a beautiful tradition was born.
A Mistaken Text Became a Real Family Tradition
Wanda and Jamal met in person for Thanksgiving in 2016, and the dinner became an annual tradition.
They have now shared ten consecutive Thanksgivings, celebrating laughter, grief, new life chapters, and deep friendship.
What started as a viral moment became a lifelong bond, and both say it changed their lives forever.
Wanda said, “I know it was fate. I feel blessed every day for meeting Jamal.”
Jamal agreed, saying, “She’s family. Not by blood, but by love and choice.”
Over the years, their story has gone viral every Thanksgiving, reminding people that kindness still matters.
Millions wait to see their annual photo together.

Their tradition even inspired a Netflix film in development called The Thanksgiving Text.
A Special Year: 10 Thanksgivings Together and a Meaningful Partnership
This year marks a milestone for the pair: their tenth Thanksgiving together.
To make it extra special, they partnered with Green Giant, which is celebrating its 100th anniversary.
Jamal said, “Sharing our tenth year alongside Green Giant’s hundredth feels so meaningful.”
The tradition has become more than just dinner. It now represents hope, kindness and human connection in a world often divided.
People say their friendship is the internet’s favorite real-life reminder that family is not always about DNA.

Jamal added, “As a kid, I dreamed of being famous. Now I know making people happy is better.”
They Thought People Would Get Tired — But Everyone Still Loves Their Story
Wanda once worried that people would eventually lose interest in their story.
She said, “I used to think people might get tired of us hogging up the news.”
But every year, comments pour in from people saying their story makes them smile or even cry happy tears.
She added, “Every time someone says we bring joy, I remember why it’s worth it.”
Their bond has survived personal loss, life changes, and the pressure of viral fame. And through it all, they still meet, hug, eat, and celebrate like real family.
As Wanda beautifully puts it, “I never knew a wrong number could feel so right.”
